About ERUDEF Rwanda

Environment and Rural Development Foundation Rwanda

Who We Are

The Environment and Rural Development Foundation Rwanda (ERuDeF Rwanda) is a conservation and sustainable development organization dedicated to protecting biodiversity and improving community livelihoods across the Albertine Rift Valley. As the Rwandan chapter of the long-established ERuDeF Network, we bring over two decades of expertise in integrated conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and community empowerment.

ERuDeF Rwanda works at the intersection of people and nature, ensuring that conservation efforts benefit local communities while safeguarding critical ecosystems such as Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe National Park, Buhanga Eco-Park, and surrounding landscapes. Our programs address environmental degradation, climate threats, and socio-economic vulnerability through education, sustainable land use, green business development, and community-led conservation initiatives.

We exist to serve as a catalyst for long-term environmental stewardship, partnering with government institutions, civil society, and international partners to protect the natural heritage of the Albertine Rift Valley.

Our Vision

A thriving Albertine Rift Valley where biodiversity is protected, ecosystems are restored, and communities enjoy sustainable, nature-based livelihoods.

Our Mission

To conserve Rwanda’s unique biodiversity and promote community-centered environmental management through education, sustainable agriculture, restoration, conservation entrepreneurship, and eco-tourism.

Our

Approach

ERuDeF Rwanda’s work is grounded in a holistic, science-based, and community-driven approach that integrates conservation with socio-economic development.

1. Community Engagement

We prioritize local ownership, ensuring that communities living near protected areas participate in planning, implementation, and monitoring of conservation activities.

2. Evidence-Based Conservation

Our strategies are informed by ecological studies, field assessments, and indigenous knowledge systems that guide our environmental interventions.

3. Integrated Development

We link conservation with livelihood improvement through:

  • sustainable agriculture
  • green enterprises
  • eco-tourism opportunities
  • renewable energy solutions

This reduces pressure on natural resources while improving well-being.

4. Partnerships & Collaboration

We work closely with government agencies, NGOs, research institutions, and international donors to deliver impactful and scalable conservation outcomes.

5. Long-Term Sustainability
By combining education, policy advocacy, and restoration activities, we build resilient ecosystems and empower communities to become long-term stewards of the environment.
